It was a pleasure to meet everyone and I think we're off to a strong start. For this week's posting, try copying and posting a brief introduction from your computer to the "comments" section of this prompt.
Hi, my name is Doug. I worked as a mechanical engineer for 15 years before entering the PDP program. I’ve completed my 405 practicum and with luck I hope to be working this fall teaching physics, math, and science. I took one philosophy class in my undergrad many moons ago. It was a course in logic, which shouldn’t be surprising coming from a math and science dude. I still remember the day when the prof told the class that the course was like math, and everyone threw their heads in their hands and moaned. There were screams of “I thought there wasn’t supposed to be any math in this course!” I have a general interest in philosophy and how ethics can be applied to education and achieving a sustainable community for our children. I also heard that 437 was easy.

I am currently a stay at home Mom of a 4 year old boy, but previous to that I worked for 15 years with children, youth and adults who are developmentally delayed. I transitioned youth from high school into community life, and primarily supported individuals to become valued, connected and active members of their community. I am finding this course incredibly interesting as in my former line of work I was regularly faced with challenging ethical issues. In the future I hope to teach in an elementary school, with a focus on children who experience barriers to learning. I hope to focus my term paper somewhere in that realm, but am not too sure what the topic will be. I must say I am a bit nervous about developing lesson plans, as I have never done that before but I am up for the challenge! I look forward to sharing this summer learning experience with all of you. Here’s to a great semester!
Hey there! My name is Peggy. I have a Bachelor of Arts from UFV, a Bachelor of Education from UBC, and a Masters of Education in Leadership and Administration from UBC. This is my first course at SFU and I have to say that it would be really nice to have windows.
I am currently a Vice Principal at a K-5 school in Abbotsford. In the summer, I will become the Principal of a small, rural school in Abbotsford. I’m pretty excited about the move.
I signed up for this course because it looked interesting, was relevant to my role as a VP, and fit my timetable (plus, as Nathan deduced, I had some free credits that were about to expire). I thought I should take some courses to get back in an academic frame of mind and get my language skills (which has been steadily worsening as I work with young, second language learners) back up to snuff.
I look forward to getting to know everyone over the coming months.
Hello everyone. My name is Shane. I am a 4th year Math student and I am really looking forward to graduating next year.
For the last 4 years I have worked with children with disabilities, mostly autism. Through this experience I think I have personally gained as much as I've given. This has sparked an interest in the developmental psychology, which is very different from my field of study. If I could summarize what working with autistic children is like, I would say no two are ever alike. My other interests lie mostly in leadership, administration and team building.
I am taking this course because I am interested in education as a possible career as a math/science teacher. The only philosophy class I've taken was logic which was a pleasant surprise how similar to math it was. My only exposure to ethics was a few books on business or corporate ethics. I am looking forward to learning more about the study of ethics and it's application in the classroom.
Hello, my name is Brittany and I am finishing a BEd and PDP this summer. I majored in Philosophy for my BA and am looking forward to having a good dose of “philosophy speak” this summer… At this point, I am thinking of doing my masters in the area of educational philosophy and curriculum development, but this is still a ways off.
I did my 405 practicum in a grade 6/7 class in a middle school in Coquitlam and loved working with that age group. I hope to teach in a middle school for a while and eventually teach Philosophy either in a secondary school or at a post-secondary level.
I am really looking forward to working (and debating *grin*) with you all this semester!
Hello all, I'm Allie and I'm just finishing up PDP. I did both my 401/402 and 405 in Surrey and had my practicum at Princess Margaret SS where I taught Humanities 8 and English 11 and 12. I was skeptical about teaching grade 8's at first, but I found it rather enjoyable, especially with the balance of the senior classes. I did my undergrad at UVic and had lived on Vancouver Island all my life until September. It's definitely different on the mainland! I chose to do PDP at SFU for something different, though, and I'm glad did. I took several philosophy classes at UVic but never any upper level classes, so I look forward to 437. I get really into discussions and love (trying) to get to the bottom of things. I seek the truth and hopefully we will all work towards that this semester! All the b.

ReplyDeleteOkay, I was kidding about the 437 part.
